A Handbook of Bioanalysis and Drug Metabolism

A Handbook of Bio-Analysis and Drug Metabolism

Recent years have seen a greater industrial emphasis in undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the pharmaceutical and chemical sciences. However, textbooks have been slow to adapt, leaving the field without a text/reference that is both instructional and practical in the industrial setting until now.
A Handbook of Bioanalysis and Drug Metabolismis a stimulating new text that examines the techniques, methodology, and theory of bioanalysis, pharmacokinetics, and metabolism from the perspective of scientists with extensive professional experience in drug discovery and development. These three areas of research help drug developers to optimize the active component within potential drugs thereby increasing their effectiveness, and to provide safety and efficacy information required by regulators when granting a drug license. Professionals with extensive experience in drug discovery and development as well as specialized knowledge of the individual topics contributed to each chapter to create a current and well-credentialed text. It covers topics such as high performance liquid chromatography, protein binding, pharmacokinetics and drugdrug interactions. The unique industrial perspective helps to reinforce theory and develop valuable analytical and interpreting skills.

This text is an invaluable guide to students in courses such as pharmaceutical science, pharmacology, chemistry, physiology and toxicology, as well as professionals in the biotechnology industry.

Transporters as Targets for Drugs

Transporters as Targets for Drugs

Transporters are proteins which span the plasma membrane and regulate the traffic of small molecules in and out of the cell. Transporters play a particularly important role in chemical signalling between neurons in the CNS, where they act to control the concentration of neurotransmitters in the synapse. The majority of transporters which are actively being pursued as targets for drug discovery are CNS located and this reflects the history of the field which began with the tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) over half a century ago. The use of transporter inhibition to regulate the synaptic concentrations of key neurotransmitters is an established approach in the discovery of psychiatric medications. This volume reviews advances in the field of transporters as targets for drug discovery in the last 10 years. The volume will be of interest to scientists engaged in drug research in the pharmaceutical industry, biotech and academia. Following an overview chapter, seven chapters written by leading experts in their area reflect a range of topics pertinent to the transporter field. General topics include recent advances in the structural biology of transporters and its impact on potential structure based drug design and the design of ligands for Positron Emission Tomography and the importance of molecular imaging in understanding early clinical data. Medicinal chemistry approaches are described outlining the discovery of selective serotonin, noradrenaline and dopamine reuptake inhibitors, current efforts towards the discovery of mixed re-uptake inhibitors with varied ‘flavours’ of monoamine inhibition, advances in the development of inhibitors for the glycine transporter and the discovery of subtype selective EAAT inhibitors. In addition to being an interesting read, the reader will receive a critical overview of progress made in this rapidly developing field.

The Chronic Diseases, their Peculiar Nature and their Homeopathic Cure

The Chronic Diseases, their Peculiar Nature and their Homeopathic Cure.

The Chronic Diseases, their Peculiar Nature and their Homeopathic Cure.
by Dr Samuel Hahnemann

Translated from the second enlarged German edition of 1835, by Prof. Louis H. Tafel. With annotations by Richard Hughes, M. D., Edited by Pemberton Dudley, M. D.

Whatever estimate Science may finally place upon the discoveries and doctrines of Hahnemann, and whatever measure of confidence in his therapeutic belief Posterity may accord or withhold, his personality and work have achieved a position which must render them perpetually historic. His teachings have been so interwoven with the entire fabric of medical progress during the last hundred years, and are so interlaced with the formative development of the incoming century, that neither the wear and tear of time nor the dissections of criticism will ever be able to dissociate them. They are destined, inevitably, to run through the texture of every page in the future annals of medicine.

An integrated and insightful look at successful drug synthesis in today’s drug discovery market
The pharmaceutical industry is unquestionably vibrant today, with drug synthesis making a vital contribution. Whether in the early developmental stages of identifying and optimizing a lead, or the latter stages of process development and cost-effective scale-up, the ability to design elegant and economical synthetic routes is often a major factor in the eventual viability and commercial success of a drug.

Contemporary Drug Synthesis examines how leading researchers and manufacturers have integrated chemistry, biology, pharmacokinetics, and a host of other disciplines in the creation and development of leading drugs. Authored by four of the pharmaceutical industry’s most respected scientists, this timely volume:

* Focuses on the processes that resulted in high-profile drugs including Lipitor, Celebrex, Viagra, Gleevec, Nexium, Claritin, and over a dozen others
* Provides an in-depth introduction to each drug, followed by a detailed account of its synthesis
* Organizes the drugs into fourteen therapeutic areas for clarity and ease of use

Process chemists provide an essential bridge between chemistry and the marketplace, creating scientifically practical drug processes while never losing sight of the commercial viability of those processes. Contemporary Drug Synthesis meets the needs of a growing community of researchers in pharmaceutical research and development, and is both a useful guide for practicing pharmaceutical scientists and an excellent text for medicinal and organic chemistry
students.
