Vitamins...Their Role in the Human Body

Vitamins: Their Role in the Human Body

This single-source reference draws together the current knowledge of the vitamins' biological properties in the context of human nutrition. Vitamins are co-enzymes, antioxidants or precursors of hormones and are therefore involved in a great many biochemical and physiological processes. They play a vital role in the maintenance of health, and there is evidence that dietary sources of vitamins have beneficial effects in the prevention of heart-related diseases, bone diseases and possibly cancer.
Following introductory chapters on historical and nutritional aspects of vitamins, the next four chapters cover relevant and detailed aspects of physiology and functional anatomy, biochemistry, immunology and the regulation of protein synthesis by nuclear hormone receptors. These background chapters, supported by a glossary of terms, provide the scientific principles upon which vitamin functions are based. The following thirteen chapters deal with each vitamin in turn. Subject areas include chemical structure, intestinal absorption, transport, metabolism, biochemical and physiological actions, immunoregulatory properties, deficiency-related diseases and potential toxicity. An extensive bibliography refers the reader to the original research literature.

Microwave Assisted Organic Synthesis

Microwave Assisted Organic Synthesis

Microwave-assisted organic chemistry has during the last years moved from being an obscurity in the laboratory environment to be an invaluable tool within chemistry research. Although the first reports on microwave-assisted organic synthesis dates back as far as 1986, the breakthrough of the technique as a routine tool in synthesis has been slow. The main reason has been difficulties in conquering the forces of the flame, i.e. there has been a lack of dedicated equipment available to perform chemistry using microwave irradiation. This lack of dedicated equipment led to the use of domestic appliances, leading to very unpredictable and sometimes devastating results. It also gave the technique an aura of black art. However, with the introduction of dedicated equipment, novel, interesting, reproducible chemistry has been and is continuously performed

Organic Synthesis: The Disconnection Approach

Organic Synthesis: The Disconnection Approach

Organic Synthesis: The Disconnection Approach, 2nd Edition introduces this important technique, to help students to design their own organic syntheses. There are forty chapters: those on the synthesis of given types of molecules alternate with strategy chapters in which the methods just learnt are placed in a wider context. The synthesis chapters cover many ways of making each type of molecule starting with simple aromatic and aliphatic compounds with one functional group and progressing to molecules with many functional groups. The strategy chapters cover questions of selectivity, protection, stereochemistry, and develop more advanced thinking via reagents specifically designed for difficult problems.

Examples are drawn from pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, natural products, pheromones, perfumery and flavouring compounds, dyestuffs, monomers, and intermediates used in more advanced synthetic work. Reasons for wishing to synthesise each compound are given.

This second edition has been fully revised and updated with a modern look. Recent examples and techniques are included and illustrated additional material has been added to take the student to the level required by the sequel, “Organic Synthesis: Strategy and Control”.

Designing Organic Syntheses

Designing Organic Syntheses

Though the programme may introduce you to some new reactions, its main aim is to suggest an analytical approach to the design of syntheses. You therefore need to have a reasonable grounding in organic chemistry so that you are familiar with most basic organic reactions and can draw out their mechanisms. If you are a third year university student, a graduate, or someone with experience of organic chemistry in practice you will probably be able to work straight through the programme to learn the approach and not need to learn any new material. If you are a second year university student or someone with a limited knowledge of organic reactions you may find you need to learn some reactions as you go along.

Named Organic Reactions

Named Organic Reactions

This book—Named Organic Reactions—is not meant to completely replace an organic chemistry textbook. It is rather a reference work on named reactions, which will also be suitable for easy reading and learning, as well as for revision for an exam in organic chemistry. This book deals with about 135 of the most important reactions in organic chemistry; the selection is based on their importance for modern preparative organic chemistry, as well as a modern organic chemistry course.

Indian Pharmacopoeia 2007 Volume 3

Indian Pharmacopoeia 2007 Volume 3

As per the drugs and Cosmetic Act, 1940 the Indian Pharmacopoeia is the legally recognized book of standards for the quality of drug substances and their preparations included therein”. The last edition of the Indian Pharmacopoeia was published in 1996. This new edition of the Indian Pharmacopoeia entitled Indian Pharmacopoeia 2007 has been prepared by the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC) in accordance with a plan and completed through the untiring efforts of its members and its Secretariat over a period of about two years. This is the fifth edition of the Indian Pharmacopoeia after independence. It supersedes the 1996 edition but any monograph of the earlier edition that does not figure in this edition continues to be official as stipulated in the second schedule of the drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940

Volume 3 Contains Monographs on Drug Substances, Dosage Forms and Pharmaceutical Aids(N to Z) followed by Monographs on Vaccines and Immunosera for Human use, Herbs and Herbal products , Blood and blood related products, Biotechnology products and Veterinary products. The scope of the Pharmacopoeia has been extended to include products of biotechnology, indigenous herbs and herbal products, viral Vaccines and additional antiretroviral drugs and formulations, inclusive of commonly used fixed-dose combinations. Standards for veterinary drugs and products that were published as a Supplement to the previous edition of the Indian Pharmacopoeia now form an integral part of this compendium. Format: In an effort to make the pharmacopoeia more user-friendly, a drastic change has been made in the design of the texts of the monographs and of the test methods. Cross-referencing has been a avoided to make each monograph complete in itself thus making it convenient to the analyst performing the tests and to the ones checking the results of analyses. The multiplicity of fonts in the texts that was feature of earlier editions has been done away with making it easier to read the contents and ensuring uniformity of presentation of the subject matter.
